Three men, Plair Tairt, Lyiotk Vitts and Adnam Kort, all in their twenties, were apprehended in relation to Mayor Kaarsâ seizure.
Chapter Eight
T he trial of the three abductors was at the regional High Court. The gallery was seething with reporters and the populace of Le-Croff.
âAll rise for the Honourable Judge Johnnie Mangaver,â beckoned the court clerk.
Judge Mangaver, in his fifties, pencil moustache, grey-haired and bespectacled, sauntered in.
âThe region of Le-Croff versus Lyiotk Vitts, Adnam Kort and Plair Tairt. You men are charged with the kidnapping of Mayor Frank Kaars under the Offences Against the Persons Act 1921, Section Twelve, also for possession of firearms without certification which contravenes the Firearms Act of 1976, Sections Five and Nine. How do you plead? Guilty or not guilty?â the clerk read the case.
âNot guilty,â the men responded.
The jury was on the qui vive from their box.
Both the prosecuting and defence barristersâ opening remarks were fleeting.
Electrician Juk Culumt was on the witness stand.
âMister Culumt, do you swear to tell the truth?â the clerk asked.
âYes,â Juk replied mousyly.
The prosecuting barrister directly examined Juk.
âMister Culumt, can you state your profession,â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âIâm an electrician, sir,â Juk replied.
âHow long have you been an electrician?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âFor five years, sir,â Juk replied.
âAre you familiar with two hundred New Quay Avenue?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âMy clients live there,â Juk replied.
âMister and Mrs Vitts, right?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âYes, sir. I repair their air conditioning units and other electricals for them,â Juk replied.
âCan you tell this court what transpired on the 22nd of July 2021,â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âOn the 22nd of July, Mr Vitts rang me to fix the air conditioning in the house. I booked him for the afternoon of the same day,â Juk said.
âGo on, Mister Culumt,â the prosecuting barrister urged.
âI went into the cellar where the air conditioning unit is. I saw Mayor Kaars there,â Juk replied.
âWas Mayor Kaars tied up when you found him?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âYes, sir. Both his hands and feet were clasped together,â Juk replied.
âThe mayor had injuries?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âMayor Kaars was bruised, his face had cuts and there were blood stains on the ground,â Juk replied.
âWhat else was in the cellar?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âWeapons,â Juk exclaimed.
âWhat type of weapons?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âPistols, AK-47s, knuckledusters, axes,â Juk replied.
âHow many guns in total?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âTwo AK-47 machine guns and four pistols,â Juk replied.
âMister Culumt, what did you do when you found the mayor?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âI alerted the police forthwithly,â Juk replied.
âMister Culumt, thank you.â The prosecuting barrister concluded the direct examination of Juk.
âDoes the Defence have any questions for the witness?â Judge Mangaver asked.
âNo, Your Honour,â the defence barrister replied.
The prolepsis in the court was rapturous. Journalists jotted ferociously, citizens watched proceedings like a soap opera.
Mayor Kaarsâ ingress caused a hubbub.
âOrder! Order! . . . Order!â the clerk cried.
The mayor was ushered to the stand.
âMayor Kaars, can you recognise these men?â the prosecuting barrister inquired.
âThese men kidnapped me,â the mayor replied.
